The Most Important Immunization For Adults

Image

Do not blame adults: adult vaccinations are trickier to organize than the standard immunizations that children receive.

Nobody likes to have a shot, but according to the CDC most adults dislike having vaccinations almost as much as kids do. Every year 45,000 United States residents die from diseases that could have prevented by vaccinations. Immunization for adults is important because people can protect themselves from tetanus, acellus pertussis, human papillomavirus, diphtheria, shingles and other serious diseases.

Women are responding well to HPV advertisements, which promote vaccination programs to prevent the human papillomavirus. Many women have decided to get the HPV vaccination for adults. The vaccine protects women from 70% of cervical cancers. Many older men and women are also choosing to protect themselves by getting the shingles vaccination for adults.

Many people do not concern themselves with a vaccine for adults until they go on an exotic vacation or have a high-risk health condition. Adults should make sure that they have received all of their childhood vaccinations and that they get their get tetanus shot every ten years. They should also talk to their physician about which vaccines they need to have before traveling to different countries.

How Effective Are Sutent And Avastin?

Image

Michigan’sComprehensiveCancerCentercarried out a recent study published in the early edition of a paer produced by the National Academy of Sciences. The study determined that because Sutent and Avastin, two drugs used for treating breast cancer, stimulate cancer stem cells present in breast tumors, they do not increase your chances of living longer.

Although the drugs minimize cancer tumors, the cancer simply starts to spread again after some time, and study author Max Wicha MD points out that the drugs do not necessarily mean a higher survival rate, despite the fact that they delay tumor recurrence.

Wicha also points out that the agents will have to be combined with cancer stem cell inhibitors, to really be effective as a treatment cancer.

During experiments with laboratory mice, it was found that both medications stop harmful blood vessels from forming, although they also triggered more cancer stem cells. Standard treatment for tumors, defined here as anti-angiogenesis drugs, are generally useless against stem cancer cells.

The study was able to identify reasons that the stem cells were activated, and believed that hypoxia, or low oxygen, was causing the number of cells to increase.

The agency actually revoked its approval for Avastin, pointing out that the effects were too brief, and that relapses were common, causing the cancer to spread.

The study suggests that a cancer stem cell inhibitor taken along with either Sutent or Avastin would be a more effective cure for tumors.

Over 209,000 Americans will have been diagnosed with cancer metastatic breast, with over 40,000 dying from the disease, by the end of 2012, according to the American Cancer Society, when discussing breast cancer awareness.

Stem Cell Research Therapy Promising For Macular Degeneration

Image

A study in its early stages is a ground breaking moment nevertheless, although it is a very small study and is concerned only with safety considerations in embryonic stem cell therapy.

InLondon, at theMoorfieldEyeHospital, where a parallel trial is in operation, a British man is now undergoing embryonic stem cell research therapy and he is the first European to receive such treatment.

In theUnited Statesstudy arm, both women in the trials suffer from one of the macular degeneration forms that result in retinal cells dying and losing central vision.

The first woman, in her 70s, has dry macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in the West. This form is age-related. The patient could only read 21 letters on a test chart to check her vision, and she is now able to read 28 of the letters.

The second woman suffers from the most common macular degeneration, Stargardt’s disease, which is seen in younger people. Before macular degeneration therapy the patient could see only hand movement and is now able to detect finger movement and more. Both women were treated with the stem cell treatment last July.

At theUniversityofCalifornia,Los Angeles, the Jules Stein Eye Institute reported no safety issues were found in either patient even after four months passed since they were treated.

In each patient, 50,000 RPE—retinal pigment epithelium—cells taken from embryonic stem cells were injected in one eye. This was done so that the vision in the treated eye could be compared to the vision in the  untreated eye.

The death of RPE retinal cells and the loss of rod and cone cells underneath that are light receptive cells, causes dry age-related macular degeneration. The same kinds of cells are lost in Stargardt’s disease, but the cause is a genetic defect and it can be detected as early as in a patient’s teens.

The theory in the studies is that the health of the underlying rods and cones will be improved as new RPE cells repopulate the epithelial layer. The ACT—Advanced Cell Technology—was developed by aUnited Statesstem cell company.

One of the authors of the study and chief science officer at ACT, Dr. Robert Lanza, stated that both patients’ vision appears improved after the cells were transplanted, even though it was a low dose, and despite the progressive nature of the disease.

He went on to say that this result is of particular importance because the goal of the therapy would ultimately be treating patients in the early stages of the disease when even better results may be experienced.

He and the other authors pointed out that the study was designed only to test the tolerability and safety of this technique on 24 patients. In the meantime, in the European study, a few of the 12 volunteers have been injected under general anesthesia. It is too soon to tell what the results will be for each patient, but all are hopeful that an upcoming assessment will show improvement in vision.

Multi-Drug Resistant TB Found In India

Image

Doctors in India have made reports of their countries initial cases of resistant TB. This strain of tuberculosis is a long feared form of the killer lung disease that is virtually untreatable.

Such cases have also been documented in both Iran and Italy since 2003. In most cases, the disease has been limited to areas of great poverty and not spread widely. However, it is possible that there are many cases yet undocumented.

There is little fear of the strains of Indian TB to spread to other locations. The disease is primarily transmitted by close personal contact and is less contagious than the flu. Most of the reported cases did not transfer from one person to another, but the mutations occurred in patients receiving poor treatment.

The World Health Organization refuses to accept the term drug resistant TB infections. It still considers these cases extensively drug-resistant. However, one of the coordinators at WHO’s Stop TB department located in Geneva says there is plenty of evidence of virtually untreatable cases.

Dozens of medicines were used on the initial cases in India, and none worked. According to the US Centers for Disease Control, these cases appear to be very resistant to the drugs available.

Information about tuberculosis disease shows it ordinarily cured by a six to nine month course of antibiotics. Interruption of the treatment or giving the patient less than the recommended amount of antibiotic allows the bacteria to return in a mutated form that is tougher than ever to kill and resistant to treatment. Tuberculosis and treatment becomes much more difficult and expensive to treat.

In the resistant cases, 12 patients failed in the initial treatments and when treated for an additional two to three years did not respond. Three of these patients have died and the remaining patients have not been successfully treated.

Private doctors that prescribed inappropriate drugs have been blamed for the increased resistance in three of four patients in one study. These patients were given inappropriate doses or the wrong types of antibiotics. Little hope is seen for the remaining nine patients. There is a single case of a mother passing the disease to a daughter and all patients are poor slum dwellers. HIV in patients results in faster deaths.

The patients with this strain of TV are part of the untouchables so there is little fuss being made over the problem. Local doctors fear that the disease will begin to spread among families.

WHO is working with local doctors to improve diagnostics and regulate TB treatment among the private sector.

In 2009, a Peruvian teen was infected in Peru and diagnosed when visiting Florida. After 18 months of treatments using experimental medications in high doses and a cost of $500,000, the teen was successfully treated. However, such resources are unthinkable in many of the developing countries such as India.

Studies of the causes of tuberculosis find that it is lying dormant in one of three people. About 10% of these patients will eventually develop the disease. India is home to 25% of the TB cases in the world and about 20% of the multi-drug resistant cases.

Best Ways To Reduce Cholesterol

Image

There has been evidence that statin drugs increase the risk for developing diabetes in older women.  Statin drugs are a very popular class of medication that is used among many ways to reduce cholesterol levels.  They alter the way that the body processes fat.  They lower ldl cholesterol and increase good cholesterol.  Lipitor, Zocor, and Crestor are all well known prescription names of this class of drug.

When total cholesterol is lowered, these drugs are proven to help prevent heart disease and reverse its early onset.  Their results are very impressive which press the insistence that they should be used in an aggressive manner to fight heart disease.

Statins And Diabetes

There have been observational studies done concerning women and Statin drugs.  They have given results that show that high amounts of post menopausal women who use these drugs were at a higher risk to develop diabetes.  However, there is no cause and effect that can be found.

What This Means For Users

Statin drugs are very common and effective methods to help prevent heart disease.  Patients, especially women in this age range, must discuss all of the benefits and possible negatives concerning these medications with their physicians.  It is essential to keep in mind that these drugs also come with other side effects like muscle irritation and adverse liver function.  These items must be monitored while a patient is taking Statins to assure the patient will not experience long term damage.

In the end, this study shows that all medicine including prescription, over the counter, and natural herbs, must be taken with caution.  Unless they are absolutely needed, other remedies should be utilized.  All medicine has side effects, so there must be more benefits than risks when deciding to undergo this form of treatment.  Possible diet changes and increasing levels of exercise may be a better idea.

Back Pain Management Tips To Ease Your Suffering

The most effective techniques of relieving neck pain include at-home exercises and spinal manipulation. These options are often better than relying on drugs for pain relief.
However, it is important to note that back pain relief treatment depends on the person.

According to recent studies, spinal manipulation therapy offered by a therapist is more effective in relieving neck and back pain that is less than 3 months old.

Scientists say that neck and back pain is a very common problem that affects three out of every four adults at some point in their lifetime.

Exercise, pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs are conventional remedies for dealing with neck and back pain.

According to researcher Gert Bronfort, people often use alternative treatments because conventional treatments do not always work.

Spinal manipulation has never been compared with exercise and medication as a remedy for neck pain.
T
esting of Neck Pain Treatments

In a study carried out over a period of 12 weeks and involving 272 adults, scientists compared the effectiveness of drug treatment and exercise to spinal manipulation.

The test subjects were divided into three groups and given the three treatments. The treatments were administered over a 12 week period.

At the start of the study the test subjects were asked to rate their neck pain. They were also asked to rate the pain they experienced at different stages of the treatments.

The final results showed that spinal manipulation is the most effective back pain management technique. The relationship between back pain & treatment is well documented and can help patients to make informed choices regarding treatment options.

Some researchers claim that spinal manipulation produced better results because more attention was given to the test subjects compared to exercise and medication.

Personal Preference

Researchers say that the patient’s personal preference is the main determining factor given the marginal differences in the results obtained from the three treatments.

Patients who are still active may prefer exercising to medication while those with little mobility may prefer medication.

The effectiveness and safety of each treatment should be discussed before any treatment is chosen.

A New Treatment For Ovarian Cancer

Image

Avastin, or bevacizumab is about to be used as a method of treating cancer, following surgery, and in conjunction with standard treatment for chemotherapy. Roche recently made the announcement, following the approval by the European Union to use it for ovarian cancer.

The chief medical officer and head of development is Hal Barron, who stated:

This approval means the first significant treatment for ovary tumors in 15 years.

Avastin is one of only a few drugs suitable for multiple cancers, as this marks the 5th tumor type for which it has been approved.

About 250,000 women all over the world are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and around 60 percent of those die from it, making it the 8th most common cancer.

Until this approval, there had only been limited treatment options available for ovarian cancer, so this is a huge step in fighting the disease.

Because it is is often diagnosed late and by then has already spread, the cancer is a major killer, and treatment typically involves removing the tumor, followed by chemotherapy for the cancer.

A woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer who received Avastin and underwent chemotherapy generally lived a lot longer, without the disease worsening. This is according to phase II studies, GOG0218 and ICON7.

Avastin is effective as it inhibits high levels of vascular endothelial growth (VEGF), which can cause tumors to develop and spread. VGEF can often mean less chance of recovering, and a greater chance of excess cavity fluids.

Originally approved in 2004, Avastin has become the first widely available anti-angiogenic therapy.

Important Information On Gastric Banding

The FDA has issued warnings regarding the misleading information and advertising with regards to the Lap-Band device designed for weight loss, which is band that is surgically implanted around the stomach to limit the amount of food a person can ingest at one seating.

Presently, the FDA has approved of two stomach bands, the aforementioned and the Realize Adjustable Gastric Band.

The FDA has sent letters directly to the marketing company and the eight surgical centers located around California to stop advertising the Lap-Band medical device because their pamphlets failed to include important information to patients, such as risks involved, warnings, side effects, and contraindications that the FDA requires. Furthermore, when risks were listed, they were done so with the text being too small to be legible.

According to Steven Silverman, the director of the Office of Compliance in FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health in the Consumer Update, the FDA’s concern is that the advertisements for this device have been glamorized without any of the risks being communicated. Consumers who may want to undergo such a surgical procedure would need to be fully aware of any and all risks involved, and gastric banding is reserved for obese patients of a certain criteria. The Lap-Band was approved by the FDA for use in morbidly obese patients whose BMI was registered at 40, or anywhere between 30 and 40 if it was in conjunction with other conditions related to obesity, like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and such. The FDA has approved Realize Adjustable Gastric Band for patients with a BMI of 40, or a 35, but in combination with conditions also related to obesity.

It is important for people to understand that a gastric band operation is not a cure-all for obesity. Instead, lifestyle changes must be made in order for a patient to achieve successful weight loss, including taking weight loss supplements.

Band surgery weight loss also comes with several serious complications aside the risks involved with the surgical procedure. Those who undergo a gastric band procedure may end up suffering from: GERD, stretching of the esophagus, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, indigestion and more.

The LA Times reported 4 deaths as a result of bariatric surgery lap band procedures at centers affiliated with this campaign, with a fifth one currently under investigation.

Studies About Kids And Nutrition

Having information about the number of calories does not always mean that we will make smarter choices, when it comes to ourselves or nutrition for kids. However, recent research suggests that we will take note when the information is easy to understand, and easy to understand information can be help for overweight children.

In particular, a study carried out by the Bloomberg School of Public Health atJohnHopkinsUniversityfound that people were less likely to buy high calorie sugary drinks when the information was clearly spelled out for them alongside the product. The study concerning nutrition and kids even found that teenagers took some notice of the displayed statistics.

The study did not indicate precisely which non sugary drinks were chosen instead, although in all probability, diet soda and bottled water were popular choices, and considered to be healthier.

This particular study is interesting, as previous similar tests have been inconclusive, or conflicting in their results. It was widely thought that posting calorie information above the counter in fast food restaurants achieved little in the way of changing the habits of customers, or ensuring children and healthy meals went together.

Various surveys in this area have had different results. A 2009 test by Yale and NYU staff found that posting the calorie count did influence what people bought. However, a later NYU study did not find these same results, and yet another study at a taco restaurant inWashingtondiscovered that there was absolutely no difference, after posting the calorie count information.

Of course, a lot of this depends on how and where the information is displayed, and calorie information that is hidden away, difficult or too small to read, or hard to interpret probably makes no difference to what a customer buys. In addition, many consumers have no idea how many calories they should be consuming during the day.

Sara Bleich, an assistant professor, when commenting on the John Hopkins study, pointed out that when calorie information is presented so that teens can actually grasp it, they do take notice of it. Further, when it comes to nutrition & kids, most consumers have no idea how many calories are in a tin of soda, and give it little thought.

American teenagers consume around 300 calories daily just from sugary drinks. Effectively using calorie information posters and other media would almost certainly make at least some difference to the rate of obesity in children.

Causes Of Cervical Cancer

Finding effective treatment for cervix cancer is a tall order for contemporary scientists. Two vaccines have recently been developed that help protect women against contracting human Pappinola virus (“HPV”), a known factor in most cervical cancer cases.

Although precise causes of cervical cancer remain undetermined, prevailing medical consensus overwhelmingly indicates that early detection and accurate information about the signs and symptoms of cervical cancer drastically decreases its incidence.

Current medical protocol strongly suggests that all women over 30 years of age have an annual Pap Smear to check for carcinoma of cervix development. Patients whose test results are normal for three consecutive years and have no family history of cervical carcinoma may be tested only once every three years.  In addition, experts advise women between the ages of 21 and 30 who are more likely to maintain active sex lives be tested annually, due to higher associated HPV risks.

A trio of well-respected American cancer research groups have recommended that females over 30 obtain HPV testing in addition to periodic Pap Smears. This advice is based upon the proven sensitivity of HPV testing in the detection of high-risk HPV viruses within cervical tissues that could progress into cancerous tumors.

The tacit inquiry underlying this controversy is essentially one of whether Pap Smears alone detect sufficient carcinoma of cervix development. An adjunct question centers upon whether or not HPV testing can adequately bridge this gap without causing unnecessary “treatment.”

One dual-screening study initially revealed that 25% more potentially carcinogenic cervical pathologies were detected than through exclusive Pap Smear testing. Five years later, dual-screened patients still exhibited a lower overall cervical cancer incidence. Both groups displayed comparable rates of high-risk cervical lesion development. This suggests that HPV testing alone does not detect many infections that might have resolved without treatment.

Cervical cancer experts currently involved in research updates have reviewed all the most current HPV and Pap Smear screening data. This collaborative effort was conducted for the purpose of devising more detailed information about the causes of cervical cancer and effective treatment of cervical cancer. All results gleaned to date strongly suggest that women past the age of 30 are well-advised to avail themselves of HPV testing benefits
